5 Weeks Old

Gracelyn and Ellie are five weeks old today. It has been an exciting five weeks to say the least. We do have both girls home now. Gracelyn came home 2 weeks ago and Ellie came home this past Sunday, 5 days ago. They are both doing fantastic! We went to the pediatrician yesterday and Gracelyn now weighs 6 lbs, 7 oz and Ellie weighs 5 lbs. 4 oz. The dr. could still hear Ellie's PDA, but we are still hoping it will close on its own. That is still a definite possibility.

My mom came to stay with us the day Gracelyn came home and she just went home yesterday. So, I am keeping the girls all by myself today for the first time. We are doing pretty well. They are both "sleeping" in their bouncy seats right now. I say sleeping, but they are making a lot of noise. I seriously think they are already talking to each other. It is so fun to hear, unless it is 4 in the morning when they decide to have one of these conversations.
Gracelyn and Ellie LOVE sleeping together. I wish it was safe for them to sleep like this all the time because they sleep so soundly when they are next to each other.

Three Weeks Old

I can't even tell you how crazy the last 48 hours have been! I spent several hours in the NICU with the girls on Wednesday and finally had to go home around 4 in the afternoon because I was completely exhausted. I had been super emotional all day and just felt like I needed some sleep, figuring everything the last 3 weeks was catching up with me. So, I headed home and by the time I got there I was feeling pretty crummy! Throughout the evening I felt worse and worse and ended up having a low grade fever. I thought I might have the flu so we called the girls' nurse and let her know so she could keep and eye on them since I had been there all day. I went to the doctor on Thursday morning and had to sit in the waiting room for a couple of hours because I didn't have an appointment. Turns out I didn't have the flu but had some other virus and an ear infection. Thankfully, Gracelyn and Ellie both seem to have made it through without getting sick!

I tell you all of this because we were supposed to room in with Gracelyn on Thursday night. I got pretty upset when I had a fever because I knew I couldn't go up there until I was better--at least 24 hours without fever. Basically the insurance wasn't going to pay for Gracelyn to stay any longer, though, so we had to do something. We had a couple of options. Either Dave could room in with her alone or I could go up most of the day today (Friday) and room in with her during the day. We decided that I might not be over this virus in time for me to spend the day up there so Dave stepped up to the plate and roomed in with BOTH girls last night!!! Ellie was still hooked up to the monitors and got a couple of her feedings through her feeding tube. But, daddy did all the diaper changes, gave Gracelyn a bath, and fed both girls most of the night. I am so proud of him. Our girls are truly blessed to have such a wonderful daddy!!

Needless to say, we took lots of pictures once he got her home. I couldn't wait for them to get here. It is such a crazy feeling to have her here after all this time.

Gracelyn and Ellie are both doing really well. Gracelyn is now taking all her feedings from a bottle. The dr. is changing the number of calories that are being added to her milk. Everytime a change in their feeding is made they have to be monitored for 24 hours. So, she is getting close to being ready to come home, but she isn't quite there yet. Ellie is getting close to taking all her feedings from a bottle. Yesterday she was getting 2 out of 3 bottle feedings so I am guessing that she will be bumped up to all today, but we haven't heard from the dr. so not sure on that. They did another echo a couple of days ago and the PDA hasn't changed, but she is still asymptomatic. As long as it isn't bothering her they will send her home with it and we will follow up with a cardiologist. Both girls are now in open cribs and are maintaining their body temp well.

I just talked to the doctor and he said that Gracelyn is staying with the same feeding as yesterday so if she continues to gain weight today there is a good chance we will room in with her tomorrow and then bring her home over the weekend. Sooooo exciting! Ellie is taking a while with her bottle feedings so he did not change her's, either. She will stay at 2 out of 3 for another couple of days. He mentioned that it is hard to know if she is slower because she is small or if it has something to do with the PDA. They will continue to watch and decide if something needs to be done. He did mention that Ellie really is acting her age. She isn't really behind where she should be based on her age. (Remember, I should still be 34 weeks pregnant.) It is more that Gracelyn is just advancing very well.

We have gotten to hold the girls together the last few days. It is really neat having them in the same room right next to each other. This first picture is from Saturday. I got to hold both girls for the first time.

Gracelyn has on the pink hat and Ellie has on the red one. Mommy looks a little tired, don't ya think?!?!

Dave holding both girls. He is such a great dad already. Why doesn't he look as tired as me???

Ellie (pink) and Gracelyn (hearts) showing their love holding hands. They have to be the most precious babies EVER!!!

God has blessed us beyond anything we could have ever imagined and we can't wait to share these little blessings with all of you. Keep those prayers coming! We see them being answered every day!!!
